NURTURING THE SPIRIT OF ILOCANO ENTERPRISE
This article is taken from PinoyMe Foundation Website http://www.pinoyme.com/consortium/pinoyme-nscc.html?utm_source=BenchmarkEmail&utm_campaign=PinoyME_July_Issue_Copy&utm_medium=email
One of the key contributions of the PinoyME Foundation (PMEF) to the
microfinance industry is bringing about a credit line for MFIs through
the Small and Medium Enterprise Credit (SMEC) of the Philippine
Business for Social Progress. With this credit line, PMEF has become a
catalyst for the growth of MFIs.
Deogracias Vistan, PMEF chair said: “We focused on addressing
certain needs of the microfinance sector and of microentrepreneurs. In
terms of direct support we try to identify MFIs that would be in a
position to obtain loans that can vary from generally three months, six
months, to one year or two years. So we are not a MFI. We don’t lend
directly to individual borrowers, we lend to MFIs.”
The SMEC has hence not only been a lifeline for emergent MFIs, it
has also helped expand microfinance services to reach more
poverty-stricken Filipinos. In the provinces of Ilocus Sur and Ilocos
Norte, it has unlocked livelihood opportunities for thousands of
enterprising Ilocanos through PinoyME partner, the Nueva Segovia
Consortium of Cooperatives (NSCC).
